PAINTED LADIES

At the 2019 Rencontres dArles, French photographer Valérie Belin is exhibiting her Painted Ladies series.Portraits of eight women, each of them carrying the traces of a brush used to paint and make up. Paintbrushes and pigments evoke tribal painting. These images seem to result from initiation rites. With their absent look, each women distingushes herself by her own pictural style: the superp osition of layers gives a form of abstraction to the portrait.
